Rural Electric Co-ops

Ohio Citizen Action Education fund works in coalition with similar organizations across Ohio to provide Ohio Rural electric cooperative members with information and resources to promote more participatory, transparent, and representative co-ops.

Our focus is on energy democracy, energy affordability, and energy freedom for homeowners and rural communities.

Polling consistently shows that electricity costs are a top concern for households, with 82% of consumers finding that their bills are somewhat or much higher than they were the year before. Ohio is no exception, as the average electrical bill for Ohioans rose 22% from the year before, the second largest percent increase in the country.

By working to support rural electric co-ops and their members, we are fighting to:

  • Promote more transparent and participatory rural electric co-ops by helping member-owners reclaim their roles as owners of a democratically controlled enterprise.
  • Help member-owners advocate for affordable energy bills.
  • Advocate for the fair and equitable treatment of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar and battery storage.
